Five generations of quality

Hendrik Hanssens, current manager of St Michel, represents the fifth generation at the helm
of our coffee roastery. With respect for the past and an eye for innovation, he is preparing
the company for the future.

Fifth-generation coffee roaster

Our coffee roastery has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1880. Almost a century
and a half ago, our roastery originated in the shadow of St Michael’s Church in Antwerp.

Still wondering where our name comes from? No need to look any further.

*In 1924-1925, we drove around with our very first van and, as De Bakker-Huybrechts, made the switch to an electric coffee roastery.

Coffee fans from the very beginning

Soon our coffee found its way to enthusiasts from all over the world. After his visit to
Belgium, Pope John Paul II was immediately captivated by our delicious coffee. He even
placed a large order for the Vatican.

But the Pope was not the only coffee lover! Prince Charles of Flanders, regent from 1944 to
1950, also enjoyed a cup of St Michel.
